SIMPLY WOOL

USING A DIZ

Using a diz is the last step to making a combed top roving after the combing is complete.   A diz is a disc or oval made of wood, plastic, or cardboard with a hole in the middle.

Experienced fibre artists will draw the wool off the comb and pass it through the diz, which is then threaded through the hole of the diz. Personally, I just begin with my pile of carded fleece, pinch an end to make a little point and thread that through the diz using a crochet hook. Then I draw the fibres through the diz and push the diz along to align my fibres and create my combed top roving.

Once all of the combed fibres have passed through the diz you’re ready to spin!
