Fact: Anything candles can do, oils can do better 🙌🏻
If you are like me, a former candle loving girl - a sucker for those breezy, light, citrus, fresh linen, summer flower candles? I feel you. It was definitely a process for me to give up candles. BUT, you have something at your fingertips which makes it *so much easier*!! Your diffuser! You can MAKE all of those scents & aromas that come in candles... and guess what? They are actually BENEFICIAL to your health.
I know the past few days have felt more like fall than summer but we still have a few more weeks of heat ahead, and later in this post I'll share some good alternatives to your favourite summer scents using just essential oils in your diffuser. Some of these blends I came up with and some were shared by other oilers who also have ditched candles and embraced their magic diffuser. We will dive into all these blends, why they are so awesome and why you need to be using them instead!
The Sad Truth About Candles
I used to work for Wheaton's here in Moncton, and with the employee discount I was able to get a new Yankee Candle every time I got paid. I had a different jar candle in every room of my house. I'd light one and get that cozy glow of a flickering candle in the evening or on a rainy day + fresh summer scents in my home. I honestly didn’t think much about it until I got pregnant and started to learn about the dangers of synthetic fragrance. I had to cut my candle habit, cold turkey for the health of my baby.
But once I stopped buying candles and learned more about essential oils and how to diffuse them I realized I didn't have to sacrifice my health for a great smelling home.
That first fall as a Young Living member, was the first fall that I hadn’t bought a pumpkin spice candle. An apple pie candle. A ‘fresh linen’ candle for the bathroom. And it was also the first fall - I felt WELL. Heart and soul and body well. Like, really well - even after having a new baby. It kinda clicked then for me, then. When the candles were gone, I realized just how much of an issue candles were causing for my family. Year round. People in my home were sneezing. Coughing. I would get headaches and then stomachaches from the sweet smell - but it didn’t all click for me until the candles weren’t being used for an entire season. That black soot in the jar? The strong scent that made some of my family nauseated? That fragrance and soot was going into my lungs.

So. What do we do instead?
Diffuse, my friend! Young Living diffusers, with their ultrasonic plates, propel essential oils into the air with the cool mist from the diffuser. The vapour that contains the essential oils stay! Even long after the diffuser turns off. Oils are super versatile and can boost your energy, bring a sense of peace to your home, may help purify the air, help with winding down after a long day and many can help keep you healthy.
So how do oils work for relaxing or sleep, exactly?
Melatonin is the body’s natural sleep hormone. Melatonin levels change when you are experiencing stress (either emotional, physical - or health). Stress decreases melatonin concentrations at night - which leads to less sleep. A lack of sleep leads to more stress. So! Simply becoming less tense and more relaxed is a fabulous way to support your body - allowing you to sleep… and stay healthy and less stressed.
What does Science say About this?
Research shows that the pure constituents in therapeutic-grade essential oils stimulate receptors in our nose which then activate regions in the brain’s limbic system associated with memory, emotion and consciousness. Simply inhaling a certain oil can ease daily stressors and emotions. And it’s so so so important for our health to eliminate stress! Basically, that fine mist coming out of your diffuser not only smells wonderful, but it's allowing the benefits of the essential oils get into your body, your family’s body and get to the different places in your body where they're needed. It helps you feel mind, body and soul well.
Plus it smells better than a candle!
The reason we share Young Living?
Because it’s IMPORTANT. You need to know where your oils are coming from and that they are safe.
Essential oils are not all the same. In fact, most essential oils on the market today are only suitable for cosmetics and perfumes. The reason Young Living’s oils are so different is their unmatched commitment to producing a pure, unadulterated oil. Young Living’s devotion to creating a highly therapeutic product means they’ve invested in their own farms, care for and nurture their own plants, trees, and shrubs, and finally distill, test, and bottle the oils that arrive on your doorstep.
With YL, you can see it with your own eyes.
I cannot wait to get to see it first hand at their Mona, Utah farm at the end of September (YL is sending me on an all-expense-paid trip for treating and training). And that’s one of the really cool things about Young Living - anyone can go visit a YL farm, it’s one of the best experiences ever! If at any point in that production process something doesn’t meet their standards, they get rid of it and start again. Because of this, our favourite oils sometimes go out of stock… and we are happy about it! Because we love getting our oils from a company that doesn’t crank them out quickly in a lab to make a buck, but waits on the plants to grow (no synthetics) and until the batch is perfect. They accept nothing less. No other company owns farms or distilleries. Not a single one.
Young Living is the only company with a Seed to Seal process and it is unmatched. Every step from planting to bottling is detailed and controlled. Check out this website for more information on the Seed to Seal guarantee.
But Young Living is more expensive, right?
You’re right, often times - it is. And the phrase, “you get what you pay for” has never been more true. Young Living is more expensive than other brands and oils you can find at a grocery store, Walmart or on Amazon because of the quality (discussed above) of the oil that is produced.
What about Organic?
Some of the other companies may claim that their oils are organic. Unfortunately, the term “organic” is not regulated by the FDA in regards to essential oils. They do not certify or use any system to grade essential oils so any oil you see making those claims is simply just using a made up marketing word.
Bottom Line: Cutting corners to save money isn’t ok for my family.
I, like you, want the best for my family and I don’t want to “save money” short-term only to spend more long-term because I used something that didn’t do what it was supposed to, left me feeling that I needed to use more oil than necessary - or perhaps used something that harmed our family.
I chose Young Living because I can view the entire process for myself. From planting seeds to bottling oil. In a market that is booming like oils? I want transparency. If you cannot walk onto your oil company's farms and watch them distill their oils at their very own distilleries, then don't use it.

🏞 Adventure Awaits
These blends are all about summer evenings. Citronella is found in several of these blends, and it is an essential oil that is not only known for it’s crisp scent, but will be a familiar smell as many insect repellants contain Citronella. Some of these blends (like Camping) would be perfect for when the mosquitos come out. The other blends will remind you of long summer evenings spent outside - where everything has a deeper, richer smell. These blends will leave you feeling like you are on a night walk!
From Twinkle Lights strung up on the back patio to hanging with friends by the pool, these blends are all crowd pleasers and will leave your friends raving about how your house smells. If you are looking for a blend to diffuse at your next gathering, start right here!
🔬We know that citrus oils have been widely studied for their uplifting, calming and emotional heath benefits, and lucky for you... all of these blends have so many citrus oils in them! When hosting others, citrus is always a safe bet to diffuse! (Stress Away contains Lime, Bergamot is also considered a Citrus and Jade Lemon smells like lime/lemon!)
School’s out. Tempers are short. It’s hot. It’s humid. In between all of the fun activities you have planned... You find yourself with a new job. Being a policewoman: keeping the peace between children who remind you of Jack-Jack from The Incredibles while also keeping your cool as they ask for a snack every 30 seconds. (No. We don’t have popsicles at 7:45AM. Can I interest you in breakfast?!)
I feel you.
Summer is wonderful - all that free time. But at the same time? The lack of structure and schedule can sometimes get to everyone. These diffuser blends will bring a sense of peace to your home. Bergamot is reminiscent of Orange, and brings a sense of calm when diffused aromatically. Lazy Sunday and Naptime might be some favourites for an afternoon resting time or for bedtime. The other blends might just become your secret weapon to keeping the peace this summer!
Good Vibes Only ✌🏻
87-93% of disease comes from our emotions and feelings! How? Thoughts become emotions, emotions become attitude. Our attitude is our reaction, and all of our daily reactions make up our lifestyle. It’s those lifestyles that lead to America’s most common diseases.
When I’m not managing my emotions and my stress levels, I don’t make the greatest choices for my well-being. If I’m stressed and exhausted, I don’t work out. If I’m angry, I can feel my shoulders and back tightening, my jaw clenching. When I am busy and overwhelmed, I reach for chocolate, sugar and eat foods I know will not make me feel well. I drink way too much coffee instead of drinking plenty of water. All of those lifestyle choices born from stress, lead to further stress or sickness.
Of our 5 senses (sight, touch, taste, hearing, and smell), our sense of smell is the only one that activates the limbic system - the part of our brain that controls our emotions. Enter essential oils - and why some oils just make you feel cozy. Or feel happy. Or feel refreshed. We can diffuse or breathe in oils to activate our limbic system (done by sense of smell) and then... process our emotions in a healthy way that doesn’t involve succumbing to bad habits when we are stressed.
So! Here are three of my favourite “feel good” summer diffuser recipes! I personally love “woodsy” smells from my diffuser blends - no matter the time of year. However, these blends have lighter citrus and floral notes and are not ‘heavy’ like a fall or winter blend would be. If I’ve had a long day? It’s impossible for me to not to feel happy when I’m diffusing these. I am especially drawn to these kinds of blends on overcast or gray days.
Lemonade Stand 🍋
It seriously makes me smile every time I see a lemonade stand at the end of the street. The nostalgia of setting up my own stand as a kid. Waiting for a hot day so that no one with spare change can refuse!
Nothing says summer like kids who are creative with how to earn some extra money! While these diffuser blends will remind you of childhood, they are also each perfect for everyday diffusing in your kitchen. Each contains a fair amount of citrus which will also give you a “happy boost” as you start your day!
Summer Vacay ⛱
From staycations to the lake to the ocean, to Disneyland these blends will let you take your vacation vibes home with you so you can delay getting ‘back to reality’ a bit more as the scents from your vacation follow you home!
🔬That one smell that always reminds you of that one thing? It’s pretty amazing, right? The olfactory bulb in your nose has direct connections to two brain areas that are strongly tied to emotion and memory: the amygdala and hippocampus. This may be why your sense of smell is so successful at triggering emotions and memories. Because of this, one thing that I like to do is to bring a ‘vacation blend’ and diffuse it all vacation long! Then, when we come home and I diffuse that blend randomly throughout the year... it always pulls me back to the good memories that we had on the trip!
Beach Days 🏖☀️🌊
These blends will remind you of the ocean, wind in your hair and sand in your toes. THIS is what the beach smells like: sunshine, tang on your lips, and all the fresh air you can handle. These blends will have you feeling like you’re at your favourite beach with a fun drink in hand!
🎡 At the Fairgrounds
These recipes are pretty self explanatory. The names basically say it all, friends! BUT. Can we just talk about Stress Away for a quick second? One of the ingredients in Stress Away is Vanilla - which is not an essential oil - but is an absolute. However. It’s awesome for diffuser blends that remind you of food - because the ‘sweet’ of vanilla reminds you of your favourite treats when paired with citrus or the ‘spice’ of cinnamon bark, nutmeg or wintergreen. If you are missing those vanilla candles? Stress Away is your friend. However - since the vanilla in this is an absolute and not an essential oil - start slow as you diffuse.
These blends are generally pretty light and citrus-y (some with a heavier undertone) perfect for ‘everyday summer’ - or whenever you want to fool someone into think you’ve been cooking up something awesome in your kitchen all day!
